Let's make a wormery!

You will need:
Earthworms
Large, clean jar or clear containter (with a few holes made in the top)
Soil
Sand
Gravel or small stones
Water
Compostable materials (old leaves/plants/flowers/fruit and vegetable peelings)
Somewhere cool and dark (like a cupboard)

  1. Pour a small layer of gravel into the bottom of your container.
  2. Add alternate layers (about 2cms) of soil and sand until you have about 4cm space at the top. Add a little water with each layer to keep it moist and make sure you have soil as the top layer.
  3. Now add your worms!
  4. Gently place your compostable materials on top and put the lid on your container (make sure it has holes).
  5. Put your worm farm in a dark cupboard (worms love the dark!) and leave them for a few days.
Check on your worms and see what they've been up to!
What do you see ?
What has happened to your layers?
Have your worms made any patterns?
What have your worms eaten?

Remember to add more compostables and water to keep your worms healthy!
