Let's make a wormery!
You will need:
Earthworms
Large, clean jar or clear containter (with a few holes made in the top)
Soil
Sand
Gravel or small stones
Water
Compostable materials (old leaves/plants/flowers/fruit and vegetable peelings)
Somewhere cool and dark (like a cupboard)
- Pour a small layer of gravel into the bottom of your container.
- Add alternate layers (about 2cms) of soil and sand until you have about 4cm space at the top. Add a little water with each layer to keep it moist and make sure you have soil as the top layer.
- Now add your worms!
- Gently place your compostable materials on top and put the lid on your container (make sure it has holes).
- Put your worm farm in a dark cupboard (worms love the dark!) and leave them for a few days.
Check on your worms and see what they've been up to!
What do you see ?
What has happened to your layers?
Have your worms made any patterns?
What have your worms eaten?
Remember to add more compostables and water to keep your worms healthy!
