Optician Visit - Science Capital

Image
This week, Reception were very lucky, as an Optician came to visit us.  The Optician spoke to the children about her job and how she helps others.  The children learnt about different parts of the eye, why people need glasses and how an eye test is conducted.  The children were able to explore resources for an eye test and tried on different coloured lenses.  The children were so engaged and loved speaking to an Optician - who is also one of our amazing parents!

The World - Sinking and floating

Image
Reception have been very interested in testing materials this week, and discovering whether certain things float or sink.  We have been reading the book Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers and exploring the WOW words which are in the story: discover, searched, floated and ignored Some children chose to make a boat for the boy and the penguin. They tested different materials in the water tray to see what would sink, and what would float.  Esther said "Miss it's floating because it's light. The paper got too soggy so it sinked." We then made a list of what materials sunk to the bottom and what floated on top. Can you test some materials at home, and send in photographs through 2Simple Evidence Me?

Happy New Year!

The children have enjoyed being back in Reception after the Christmas break. Some children spent most of the morning exploring our outdoor area and were fascinated by ice which had frozen.  The children used some brilliant language when talking to their friends. Some children applied our WOW Words which we had covered in our Reading lessons to real contexts.  We learnt about the word frost when reading Stickman by Julia Donaldson. Tegh said "Miss look at all the ice, I can see through it. T he frost is so cold on the grass."
